India – Solar PV Installation in Orphanage

2015
Tokuda, India

  • Location: Tokuda Village, Odisha, India (450 km from Bhubaneswar)
  • Beneficiaries: ~50 children (orphans and half-orphans) in the orphanage
  • Timeframe: May 2015 – December 2015
  • Partners: Enfants, Espoir du Monde (France), Service to Humanity Foundation (India)
  • Project Budget: ~€17,000

Initial Situation:

The orphanage, located in a remote jungle, has no electricity. A small 300W solar system installed in 2010 is broken, leaving the orphanage reliant on candles and torches. The lack of lighting poses safety risks, including the danger of venomous snake bites (which have caused two deaths). The institution also needs electricity to power a fridge for storing antidotes.

Project Description:

The project aims to install a 2kW solar PV system with a 20kWh battery capacity to provide reliable electricity. EWB Luxembourg has not visited the site yet, and an exploration mission may be necessary to assess local conditions and suppliers. The estimated cost includes this mission and additional wiring.

PROJECT STATUS: EXECUTED
